Features

Everything you need to get the job done

Batch Processing

Calculate freight class for up to 100 shipments at once. Paste from a spreadsheet or upload a CSV/Excel file.

Reclassification Risk Warnings

Get visual warnings when your density falls near a class boundary -- the zone where carriers are most likely to reclassify and charge fees.

Density Analysis

See the full breakdown: volume in cubic feet, density in PCF (pounds per cubic foot), and the resulting NMFC freight class.

CSV Export

Export all results to CSV with dimensions, density, class, and risk level. Ready for Excel, rate quotes, and carrier negotiations.

Beyond-Density Factor Advisory

Guided prompts about stowability, handling, and liability -- the non-density factors that carriers may use to adjust your class.

Calculation History

Access past calculations anytime. Re-download CSV exports and review previous results without re-entering data.

Benefits

Why our customers love this tool

Avoid Reclassification Fees

Carrier reclassification fees cost $50-$150+ per incident, and up to 25% of LTL shipments get reclassified. Knowing your correct class before booking eliminates surprise charges.

Process Entire Catalogs at Once

Upload your product catalog dimensions and get freight classes for every SKU in seconds. No more classifying items one at a time.

Updated for 2025 NMFC Changes

The July 2025 NMFC overhaul restructured nearly 100 commodity groups. Our calculator uses the current density-based classification system with all updates applied.

No API Keys or Setup Required

Unlike our geocoding tools, the freight class calculator runs entirely on our servers with zero external API dependencies. Start calculating immediately after creating your account.

Everything You Need to Know

Built for shipping professionals who handle LTL freight

Who Is This For?

  • Shipping Managers - Classify shipments before booking to avoid reclassification fees
  • Freight Brokers - Verify freight class for accurate rate quotes across multiple carriers
  • 3PL Coordinators - Batch-classify pallets across multiple clients and shipments
  • E-commerce Businesses - Determine freight class for products sold via LTL shipping
  • Warehouse Managers - Classify outbound freight and document for carrier audits
  • Supply Chain Analysts - Audit freight class assignments across product catalogs

How It Works

  1. Enter dimensions and weight for single items or paste/upload a batch of shipments
  2. Choose your units - supports both imperial (inches/lbs) and metric (cm/kg)
  3. Get instant results - density, freight class, and reclassification risk for every item
  4. Review beyond-density factors - optional prompts for stowability, handling, and liability
  5. Export to CSV - download results for rate quotes, carrier negotiations, or internal documentation

How Much Can You Save?

Freight class directly determines your LTL shipping rate. Getting it wrong is expensive:

  • Reclassification fees: $50-$150+ per incident when carriers adjust your class
  • Reweigh charges: $25-$75+ when carrier dimensioners measure differently
  • Shipment delays: Up to 72 hours when disputes arise
  • Rate impact: A single class tier difference can change your rate by 10-30%

If you ship 20+ LTL pallets per month, even preventing 2-3 reclassifications pays for a full year of this tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Freight class is a standardized classification system (NMFC) used by LTL carriers to price shipments. It ranges from Class 50 (lowest cost, highest density) to Class 500 (highest cost, lowest density). Using the wrong freight class when booking a shipment can result in carrier reclassification fees of $50-$150+ per incident, plus shipment delays.

Under the 2025 NMFC system, freight class is primarily determined by density -- your shipment's weight divided by its volume (measured in pounds per cubic foot, or PCF). Higher density = lower class number = lower shipping cost. The calculator takes your dimensions and weight, computes the density, and maps it to the correct class on the NMFC density scale.

In July 2025, the NMFTA overhauled the freight classification system, reclassifying nearly 100 commodity groups to a density-based structure. Many products that previously had fixed class assignments are now classified by density. This means accurate density calculation is more important than ever. Our calculator uses the updated 2025 density-based scale.

Reclassification happens when a carrier re-measures your shipment and determines it belongs in a different (usually more expensive) freight class. Our tool calculates how close your density is to a class boundary. If your density is within 5-10% of a boundary, you get a warning -- this is the danger zone where carriers are most likely to bump you to a higher class.

Yes! Batch mode lets you calculate freight class for up to 100 items at once. Enter dimensions and weight as tab or comma-separated values (one item per line), or upload a CSV/Excel file. All results can be exported to CSV.

While density is the primary factor, carriers may also consider stowability (can it be stored efficiently?), handling (does it require special care?), and liability (is it high-value or perishable?). These factors can cause a carrier to assign a higher class than density alone suggests. Our tool provides advisory prompts about these factors after calculation.

Yes. You can enter dimensions in centimeters and weight in kilograms. The calculator automatically converts to imperial units for the density calculation (since NMFC uses pounds per cubic foot) and displays results in your chosen unit system.

The 14-day free trial gives you full access: single and batch mode, CSV export, reclassification risk warnings, beyond-density advisory, and calculation history. Trial users get 5 uses per day with up to 10 items per use. No credit card required. Subscribers get unlimited uses and items.
