Everything You Need to Know About Dimensional Weight
Understanding DIM weight is critical for shipping cost optimization
Who Is This For?
- E-Commerce Sellers - Amazon, Shopify, eBay sellers who need to calculate DIM weight for product listings and shipping cost estimates
- 3PL Fulfillment Centers - Process hundreds or thousands of packages daily and need fast, accurate billable weight calculations
- Freight Brokers - Quote accurate shipping costs for clients based on dimensional weight calculations
- Logistics Coordinators - Evaluate packaging options and carrier rates to optimize shipping costs
- Small Business Owners - Ship products and need to understand how carriers calculate billable weight
How Dimensional Weight Works
Carriers charge based on either actual weight or dimensional (DIM) weight—whichever is greater. This is called the billable weight.
DIM Weight Formula: (Length × Width × Height) / DIM Divisor
Current Carrier Divisors (2026):
- FedEx: 139 (all domestic shipments)
- UPS: 139 (daily pickup accounts)
- USPS: 166 (Priority Mail, Parcel Select)
- DHL: 166 (packages over 1 cubic foot)
For example, a 12" × 12" × 12" box weighing 5 lbs would have a FedEx DIM weight of (12 × 12 × 12) / 139 = 12.4 lbs. You'd be charged for 12.4 lbs, not 5 lbs.
How to Use This Tool
- Single Package Mode: Enter length, width, height, and actual weight. Click "Calculate" to see DIM weight and billable weight for all 4 carriers.
- Batch Mode: Upload a CSV file with your package dimensions. Process up to 1,000 packages at once (paid tier) or 10 packages (trial).
- Compare Carriers: See side-by-side comparison of billable weights to choose the most cost-effective carrier.
- Export Results: Download a CSV file with all DIM weights and billable weights for import into shipping software.
- Access History: Review past calculations anytime to track seasonal changes or compare packaging options.
Tips to Reduce DIM Charges
- Use smaller boxes: Every inch counts. Reduce box dimensions to lower DIM weight.
- Choose the right carrier: USPS has a higher divisor (166) than FedEx/UPS (139), making it cheaper for lightweight, bulky items.
- Test packaging options: Compare different box sizes using this tool to find the most cost-effective option.
- Optimize product packaging: Work with suppliers to reduce product packaging size where possible.
- Consolidate shipments: Combine multiple items into one box instead of shipping separately when possible.
ROI: Save Money on Every Shipment
Understanding DIM weight can save you 10-30% on shipping costs by helping you:
- Choose the right carrier for each package
- Optimize packaging to avoid unnecessary DIM charges
- Negotiate better rates with carriers (armed with accurate cost data)
- Avoid shipping cost surprises that hurt profit margins
For a business shipping 100 packages/day at an average cost of $10/package, a 15% savings = $150/day or $54,000/year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Dimensional (DIM) weight is a pricing technique used by shipping carriers to account for package volume. It's calculated as (Length × Width × Height) / DIM Divisor. Carriers charge based on whichever is greater: actual weight or DIM weight.
Most carriers charge based on DIM weight for packages that are large but lightweight. If you don't calculate DIM weight before shipping, you may be surprised by higher-than-expected shipping costs. This tool helps you know the exact billable weight before you ship.
We support FedEx, UPS, USPS, and DHL with their current 2026 DIM divisors (FedEx/UPS: 139, USPS/DHL: 166). We update divisors annually as carriers announce changes.
Trial users can process up to 10 packages per batch upload. Paid subscribers can process up to 1,000 packages per batch upload.
Yes! Paid subscribers can export results as a CSV file with all DIM weights and billable weights for import into shipping software or spreadsheet analysis.
No. This tool is 100% self-contained and does not require any external API keys. All calculations are done using standard DIM weight formulas.
You can input dimensions in either imperial units (inches and pounds) or metric units (centimeters and kilograms). The tool automatically converts to the appropriate units for calculation.
Yes. All calculations are saved to your account history so you can reference them later. This is useful for tracking seasonal changes or comparing packaging options over time.
