Getting Started with Batch Geocoder
Welcome to the Batch Geocoder! This tool converts addresses, ZIP codes, and city names into precise latitude/longitude coordinates using the Google Maps Geocoding API.
What Does This Tool Do?
The Batch Geocoder transforms location data into geographic coordinates that you can use for mapping, route planning, logistics analysis, and more. Simply paste a list of addresses, upload a spreadsheet, or type locations one per line, and get back:
- Latitude and longitude coordinates
- Formatted standardized addresses
- Accuracy levels for each result
- Parsed address components (street, city, state, ZIP, country)
Setting Up Your Google Maps API Key
Before you can start geocoding, you need a Google Maps API key. This is your personal key that connects the tool to Google's geocoding service.
Watch our step-by-step video guide: How to Get a Google Maps API Key
The setup takes about 5 minutes and includes:
- Creating a Google Cloud account (free)
- Enabling the Geocoding API
- Generating your API key
- Setting up billing (Google provides $200/month in free credits)
Once you have your API key, enter it in the tool's setup page. Your key is encrypted and stored securely - we never see or use it ourselves.
Running Your First Batch
After setting up your API key:
- Enter your locations - Type addresses, cities, or ZIP codes, one per line. Or upload a CSV/Excel file.
- Click "Geocode" - The tool processes each location through Google Maps.
- Review results - See coordinates, formatted addresses, and accuracy levels.
- Export to CSV - Download your results for use in mapping software, databases, or spreadsheets.
Understanding the Results
Each geocoded location includes:
- Coordinates - Latitude/longitude in decimal degrees
- Formatted Address - Google's standardized version of the address
- Accuracy Level - How precise the coordinates are (Exact, Interpolated, Geometric Center, or Approximate)
- Address Components - Individual fields like city, state, ZIP code, and country
Your calculation history is saved automatically, so you can review past batches anytime.
